You can find information about Eshu everywhere. A map of how it all fits together is much harder to find.

Brazil’s Sacred Umbanda organized the Orishas into a clear, teachable system. In 13 lessons, you learn where Eshu sits within it, why that context matters, and how to begin recognizing his movement in your own life.

You find one explanation of Eshu.
Then another.
And another.
Soon, you have many pieces — but no map, and no real understanding of how they fit together.

Sacred Umbanda offers a structured framework that shows how those pieces connect.

First, we build the foundation. Then, we enter the world of Eshu with clarity and confidence.

Laroyê Eshu!

During this experiential course, you’ll:

  • Understand how Eshu fits within a larger spiritual and philosophical system.
  • Build a framework for understanding the Orishas, spiritual forces, and the movement, communication, choice and change they express.
  • Connect ideas that may have seemed scattered or unrelated until now.
  • Discover the cultural and philosophical roots behind concepts you may have already encountered online.
  • Begin recognizing how the symbolism of the crossroads relates to moments of movement and decision in your own life.
  • Explore Eshu as a force associated with movement, communication, possibility, choice and transformation.
  • Learn two traditional ritual baths from Sacred Umbanda, with step-by-step guidance on how to prepare and perform them.
  • Build your first firmeza (ritual of connection with Eshu), following clear, practical instructions.
  • Approach these teachings with the context you need to explore them more deeply and respectfully.

What You’ll Discover in These 13 Lessons

Move from scattered information to a structured understanding of Eshu.

The journey begins by giving you the larger map: ancestral knowledge, the development of Afro-Brazilian traditions, the Orishas, divine forces, mediumship, and the philosophical framework of Sacred Umbanda.

Only then do we move into Eshu himself.

You will explore the crossroads, historical misunderstandings surrounding Eshu, his place within a larger spiritual order, and how movement, communication, possibility, and choice are understood through this tradition.

Illustration for The EDP Value Proposition
Lesson 1The EDP Value Proposition

Priestess Iya Ju (Ifagbemisola) opens the school herself, and names the language you are about to learn: Sacred Umbanda, an ancestral framework for reading the forces that move through your own life. No worship required, no temple to answer to. You will learn why she calls this a language rather than a religion, and how every lesson ahead balances solid theory with lived practice, foundation before any practice begins. If something in you already recognizes this ground, welcome. Ashe.

Illustration for The Great Crossing
Lesson 2The Great Crossing

Before this became a language you could speak, it survived an ocean. This lesson traces Sacred Umbanda to the transatlantic crossing that could not erase the divine forces, songs and rituals carried inside the people who survived it, and to the three African roots, Yoruba, Bantu and Fon, that recognized each other beneath different names and different tongues. Then the thread widens: chi, prana, ka, Ashe, different names for one force cultures apart kept discovering on their own. A quiet closing exercise: notice the moments you already reach for something unseen, without naming it.

Illustration for The Birth of Something New
Lesson 3The Birth of Something New

A specific date, November fifteenth 1908, a seventeen year old medium, and a spirit the room called backward and unworthy. This lesson tells the night Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas answered that rejection by naming an entirely new path, open to every guide society had pushed aside. You will trace the direct line from that night to the very course you are taking, through Rubens Saraceni, who turned an oral tradition into a path anyone could study. And you will see why Umbanda, born from four cultures meeting as one, carries its roots forward as a living wisdom, still unfolding today.

Illustration for Who Are the Orishas?
Lesson 4Who Are the Orishas?

Long before any medium spoke their name, they were already there. This lesson introduces the Orishas properly: forces of nature personified, each carrying its own field and gifts, facets of one source flowing from Olorum through Oshala. You will also learn the difference between an Orisha and a Line of Work, Caboclos, Black Elders and the spirits who serve alongside them, a distinction that changes how you read everything ahead. One question closes the lesson: of everything you just heard, did one Orisha already draw you in?

Illustration for The Map of Divine Thrones
Lesson 5The Map of Divine Thrones

Sacred Umbanda draws its forces on two sides, not good against evil, but light against shadow, expansion against transformation, each needed for the other to exist. This lesson gives you the whole architecture: seven Divine Thrones, Faith, Love, Knowledge, Justice, Law, Evolution and Generation, each splitting into a masculine and a feminine expression, fourteen forces dancing in one mandala. You will meet Eshu and Pombagira standing at the center of the Left Side, and understand why that side is not the opposite of good.

Illustration for Mediumship: A Natural Capacity
Lesson 6Mediumship: A Natural Capacity

An old Itan opens this lesson: Orunmila’s desire to become the great diviner, and Eleguá, guardian of crossroads, teaching him that true spiritual communication is never about personal power. From that story you will learn something that reframes everything: mediumship is not a rare gift reserved for a few, it is a natural capacity of human consciousness, sensed differently by everyone, and yours already lives inside you. You will also meet the three pillars that turn that sensitivity into a trustworthy channel: purification, humility, and careful training.

Illustration for Your Path Forward
Lesson 7Your Path Forward

Six lessons ago you arrived a stranger to all of this. This closing lesson takes stock of everything you now carry, the history, the map, the language, and turns to the question that matters next: where do you walk from here? A map, no matter how beautifully drawn, never walks anywhere by itself. You will see exactly where each path can take you, from our course on Eshu, the entry point of this entire school, to the deeper mentorship built for real accompaniment. There is no wrong order, and no deadline. You are no longer starting from zero.

Illustration for Before We Begin
Lesson 8Before We Begin

Welcome to something that will change how you move through your own life. Before we open Lesson One, take a few minutes to understand the path ahead: five lessons built to prepare you, clear old fear, take you to the very beginning of creation, and teach you the ancient language of Eshu himself. By the end you will have built a living point of contact you can return to whenever you need him. This is not theory. This is the beginning of a real relationship with the guardian who stands at every crossroads in your life. Take a breath. Laroye, Eshu.

Illustration for The Guardian at the Crossroads
Lesson 9The Guardian at the Crossroads

Every culture on earth has recognized the same truth: transformation needs a guardian. Anubis at the threshold of death, Hermes opening pathways, and at every crossroads of your own life, Eshu. This lesson prepares your heart before the teaching begins, revealing what he truly offers you: movement when you are stuck, clarity when you are confused, courage when you are afraid, and freedom from who you thought you had to be. You will also learn the difference between fear and respect, and why so much of what you were taught about him was never true. Are you ready to meet him?

Illustration for Decolonizing the Guardian
Lesson 10Decolonizing the Guardian

For centuries, colonizers reached for the only word they had for a force they did not understand, and called Eshu the devil. This lesson strips that lie away and reveals the living truth beneath it: Eshu is not evil and never was. He is neutral polarity, the void that makes all creation possible, the cosmic mirror that shows you exactly what you bring to him. You will learn why fear was planted where respect belongs, and how to finally build your relationship with Eshu on truth instead of centuries of distortion. This healing is yours to claim, at your own pace.

Illustration for The Cosmogony
Lesson 11The Cosmogony

Before the earth existed, there was only Olorum, infinite and complete, until one moment changed everything: awareness of what lay outside itself. From that awareness, Eshu was born, the void before creation, the zero before the one. This lesson takes you to the very beginning through an ancient itan, the story of why Eshu must always be honored first, and what happened to the Orisha who forgot that law. You will learn how Eshu and Oshala work together, void and space, emptiness and fullness, and why Eshu is called the firstborn before the first. This is theology made into a story you will never forget.

Illustration for Understanding Eshu
Lesson 12Understanding Eshu

When people speak of Eshu, they are actually speaking of two different things, and confusing them creates real misunderstanding. This lesson makes the distinction crystal clear: the ONE cosmic Eshu, the neutral throne of pure potential, and the MANY working Eshus who meet you at your own crossroads. You will learn to read their names like maps, each one revealing exactly which Orisha’s field it works within and what kind of transformation it offers. And you will begin the most personal part of this journey: discovering which Eshu is yours, at your own pace, through relationship rather than guesswork. The names are not random. They are a language, and you are about to learn to read it.

Illustration for Building Your Firmeza
Lesson 13Building Your Firmeza

You have traveled from the first lie stripped away to the very beginning of creation, and now you arrive at the most tangible moment of this course: building your firmeza, a living threshold inside your own home where your relationship with Eshu becomes real and daily. This is not a small thing. It is a place he can find you, one you will return to for protection, for clarity, and for that quiet redirection when life feels stuck or heavy. By the end of this lesson you will understand exactly what your firmeza does and how to activate it, and you will close this course carrying something far greater than information: a living relationship that is yours for the rest of your life. Laroye, Eshu.

What Students Are Saying About Iyá Jú’s Teachings…

★★★★★

For years, I had thought I had a good, peripheral understanding of African cosmology, but Ju’s Left Side of Olarun class served as a complete introduction to the Orishás and their relevance to our human experience.

As the proverbial career student, I appreciated how the course balanced intellectual rigor with experiential learning, allowing participants to engage at their own pace without sacrificing substance. And, my life looks very different because the offerings were so rich & accessible.

It challenged me intellectually and spiritually, while offering a clear, grounded framework for integrating ritual as it fits into my personal life. I highly recommend this course to anyone seeking a serious and reciprocal engagement with the energies known as Orisha.

The course of the left line with escola de pentagrama was absolutely life changing. It brought history, theory, deep understanding and practical applications to an area of Umbandaime that can often be misunderstood.

I love that the focus was on building our connection to these beings through direct personal experience. What Julianna has put together is a comprehensive path of discovery and teachings that can often only be received through oral tradition in Portuguese while in Brazil.

To have access to this wisdom is truly a gift that has enhanced the quality of my life as well as my connection to the spiritual constellation of umbandaime.

Dr. Leila Munla
★★★★★

I had the rare gift of witnessing Juliana Brunquell share the Language of the Orishas in New York — a living current of ancestral wisdom that moved far beyond cultural or spiritual study. It became a sanctuary. A place where hearts could unfold, where grief and joy could speak freely, where silence was held with reverence, and truth was met with open eyes.

In a world fraying at the seams — where connection is often filtered through screens and fear keeps us apart — Juliana’s work dares to gather us in presence. She invites us to remember what it means to be human, to be witnessed, to be vulnerable without shame.

Her path is one of gentle strength. She guides not by control, but by awakening power from within. And always, this journey is held in community — a web of support where each thread strengthens the whole. In her circles, independence does not mean isolation. It means rising in your truth, and letting others rise with you.

Juliana’s vision is one of courageous love — love that makes space for mistakes, for anger, for forgiveness. Her teaching whispers what we’ve forgotten: that conflict can be sacred, that healing can be shared, and that we can build something beautiful without hiding from the dark.

This work is not only meaningful. It is medicine. And in times like these, it is essential.

You may arrive here because you have already read about Eshu.
Maybe you have watched videos, encountered stories, learned symbols, heard different interpretations, or discovered individual pieces of Afro-Brazilian spirituality.

But individual pieces are not the same as understanding the system they belong to.
This course gives you the map and a path to walk it with clarity and confidence.

You begin with the foundations of the worldview, learn how the Orishas are organized within Sacred Umbanda, and then explore where Eshu sits within that larger structure.
And once the map becomes clearer, concepts that once seemed disconnected can begin to make sense together.

My experience with the course was phenomenal. Like literally nothing short of mind blowing. Watching portals and timelines collapse in near real time and in direct relation to the study, and the offerings. It changed the way I hold relationship to everything. It helped me understand symbol so much deeper. And I'm not afraid of the dark anymore ha ha ha.

I will say this is not a class that is for the faint of heart, however, it is for those with a great faith and love for transformation & alchemy. If I had the time I would take this class every single time it was offered because every time there's something new to discover, and the community aspect hold you the whole way! Thank you, Juliana for your devotion and for your channel!

I took her course on the left side of Olorum and I must say it was way better than I thought it was going to be.

I knew it was going to be good because Ju knows so much, but it helped me out in more ways than I even could have imagined. There's such a rich history in the tradition of the Orishas and she really knows her stuff.

The tradition and the culture fascinates me and also the prayers. It wasn't just a spiritual program for me, it was truly a psycho-spiritual program. It helped me out, it helped me reframe a lot of things and troubles and passages that I've been going through in my life and the prayers and the baths and the concepts.

The Orishas are really good role models for us to live by and the prayers really helped me to elevate my thoughts and again, reframe things that might have been bothering me or it gave me a different perspective of ways to see certain situations that where, I must say, very helpful.

And again, the daily prayers really helped me elevate my thoughts for the day and put me in the right mood, so I highly recommend and thanks.

The experience was deep, intuitive, and truly impactful. The course helped me make sense of certain patterns and events that had been showing up in my life. It was not just about learning something new - it was about understanding what was already there but unspoken.

I left with more clarity, more trust in my instincts, and a greater awareness of the energy moving around me. If you are even slightly open to receiving deeper insight, this is the type of experience that can shift your perspective in a meaningful way.
